Antioch is an unincorporated area in Nebraska served by Nebraska Interstate Drug Lawyer Dan Stockmann. It is somewhat of a ghost town in Sheridan County, located about 15 miles east of Alliance. It falls on Nebraska Highway 2, though it actually took its name from Antioch, Ohio. Known to many as “the potash capital of Nebraska,” the area is has seen fewer and fewer residents over the years.
Antioch is located in the Sandhills region of western Nebraska, it has always been quite quaint – only have one church, a schoolhouse, and a store at the start of World War I. Things changed in 1917 when scientists at the University of Nebraska established a way to distill potash from the water in the lakes that are found in the Sandhills. Before then, it had been imported from Germany and the price had skyrocketed from $10 per ton to over $150 per ton. This changed the status of Antioch and it became the home to five potash reduction companies, including the American, Nebraska, Alliance, National, and Western potash companies. These companies supplied most of the US with potash during World War I. Factory workers came to town and Antioch was flourishing with some 5,000 people in 1918. There were some questions about whether or not the Nebraska Secretary of State and Nebraska State Land Commissioner favored Antioch over other cities and areas of the state, building some distaste for it.
Soon enough, however, the war ended and the potash trade went down. Factories closed, people moved to new areas, and the town returned to quiet. Today, it has fewer than 25 residents.
