Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) are on board as well, with 56% in favor. The main holdouts right now are in the Silent Generation (born 1928-1945), with just 35% in favor.
Democrats and Independents Agree
Overall, 70% of democrats are in favor of legalization, with independents not far behind at 65%. Only 43% of republicans do, which is likely part of what’s happening here in Nebraska, as 78% of the population leans republican, per Pew. A Gallup poll shows a similar trend, but indicates that republican support has climbed to 51% nationwide.
Educated People are More-Likely to Support Legalization
Arguably, the biggest stereotype about marijuana supporters is that they’re uneducated and/or poor. That’s not the case at all. Looking at people with college degrees, 65% are pro-marijuana. Although the majority (54%) of those who only possess a high school education or less are still in favor, they aren’t the ones leading the pack.
Who Are Pro-Marijuana Activists?
In reality, pro-marijuana activists come from every walk of life. They’re celebs like Bill Maher, Jennifer Aniston, Susan Sarandon, and of course, Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg. They’re business professionals, white-collar workers, students, parents, grandparents, and more. While people can pick apart the demographics of who supports the legalization of marijuana to dispel common misconceptions, the reality is that roughly six out of every ten people you meet today supports legalization.
